Sacrifice in The Lottery by Shirley Jackson and Rocking Horse Winner by
The point of view of tradition in The Lottery by Shirley Jackson is the normal once of year gathering on the townspeople. This gathering is held in order to pick, via a lottery drawing, to decide who in the town is going to be stoned to death. ââ¬Å"The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten oââ¬â¢clock; in some towns there were so many people the lottery took two days and had started on June 26th, but in this village, where there were only about three hundred people, and the whole lottery took less than two hours, so it could begin at ten oââ¬â¢clock in morning and still be through in time to allow the villagers to get home for noon dinner.â⬠(Kennedy & Gioia, 2013, pp. 251). The fact that the people gather and discuss everyday issue prior to the start of the lottery all point to the blind tradition of selecting some to be stoned to death. The author also points out in her story that no one knew when or why the tradition of the lottery began. Even not knowing Tessie Hutchinson, at first had no issues with the annual event. It was only when she ââ¬Å"wonâ⬠the lottery that she developed the point of view that was bias or judgmental. Mrs. Hutchinson protests the process of the lottery and the townââ¬â¢s methods, ââ¬Å"It isnââ¬â¢t fair, it isnââ¬â¢t rightâ⬠Mrs. Hutchinson screamed, and then they were upon her.â⬠(Kennedy & Gioia, 2013, pp. 256). The interpretation of the stoning is that the town quantifies the reason to murder to satisfy the harvest. The point of view of materialism in the Rocking Horse Winner by D.H. Lawrence is the seen from inside the mind of child in the story, Paul. ââ¬Å"He went off by himself, vaguely, in a childish way, seeking for the clue to ââ¬Å"luck,â⬠Absorbed, taking n... ...ing horse, her desires are never satisfied. In conclusion, both short stories you can see that they both arrive at a sacrifice of the protagonistââ¬â¢s from different paths. The Lottery is from the view point of blind tradition and The Rocking Horse Winner is from the view point of materialism, the love of money. Although both stories are similar with sacrifice as the end result, the sacrifices are for to completely different circumstances. Tessie Hutchinsonââ¬â¢s sacrifice is to satisfy the harvest, which benefits the town. Paulââ¬â¢s sacrifice is to satisfy his mother happiness, which benefits an individual. Five Myths about Immigration Essay
Author David Cole explains in ââ¬Å"Five Myths about Immigrationâ⬠that people are misinformed about immigrants in America and blame them for all the problems in the American society. Cole comments that the ââ¬Å"Native Americansâ⬠, which have nothing to do with what we call Native Americans today, were labeled as ââ¬Å"Know-Nothingsâ⬠because they simply did not know anything about immigrants and prejudged immigrants who came into the country. The author quotes one ââ¬Å"Know-Nothingâ⬠for saying that ââ¬Å"more than half the prisons and almshouses, more than half the police and the cost of administering criminal justice are for foreigners.â⬠In the 1860s, immigrants arrived from Ireland and Germany causing ââ¬Å"anti-alien and anti-Catholic sentimentsâ⬠to appear in states such as Massachusetts and New York. Cole takes this topic to heart because his ancestors were among the ââ¬Å"dirt-poor Irish-Catholicsâ⬠who moved to America in the 1960s but were fortunate because after fifteen years the prejudice faded away. Now, 140 years later, the author points out that a similar prejudice has returned with the exception that the focus has changed from ââ¬Å"Irish Catholics and Germansâ⬠to ââ¬Å"Latin Americans (most recently, Cubans), Haitians, and Arab-Americans.â⬠Cole explains how five commonly held beliefs regarding immigrants to the United States, are in reality ââ¬Å"myths.â⬠Coleââ¬â¢s first misunderstanding ââ¬Å"mythâ⬠is that ââ¬Å"America is being overrun with immigrants.â⬠America is a ââ¬Å"nation of immigrantsâ⬠, which has been true since Christopher Columbus landed in this country. Although most Americans believe that foreign-born people make up a large population of the United States, Cole notes that only eight percent of immigrants fall in this category. In fact, ââ¬Å"between seventy and eighty percentâ⬠of those who immigrate each year are ââ¬Å"refugees and immediate relatives of U.S. citizens.â⬠In addition, immigrants living in the United States only make up one percent of the countryââ¬â¢s population. ââ¬Å"Most aliens do not cross the border illegally,â⬠emphasizes Cole, ââ¬Å"but enter legally and remain after their student of visitor visa expires.â⬠Coleââ¬â¢s second ââ¬Å"mythâ⬠is a misjudgment that ââ¬Å"Immigrants take jobs from U.S. citizens.â⬠This is a common misunderstanding Americans have about immigrants. It is easier for a person to point out that jobs are being taken away from U.S. citizens, Cole argues, than to admit that immigrants haveà indeed started successful business employing both citizens and immigrants alike. As documented by a 1994 A.C.L.U Immigrantsââ¬â¢ Rights Project report, various studies prove that immigrants ââ¬Å"create more jobs than they fill.â⬠Cole mentions a study that found 78,000 new jobs were created in the Los Angeles County between 1970 and 1980 because of Mexican immigration. Cole comments how Governor Mario Cuomo of New York announced immigrants have provided thousands of jobs from 40,000 immigrant owned companies which provided ââ¬Å"$3.5 billion to the stateââ¬â¢s economy every year.â⬠Coleââ¬â¢s third ââ¬Å"mythâ⬠includes the belief that ââ¬Å"Immigrants are a drain on societyââ¬â¢s resources.â⬠Cole mentions that Americans feel immigrants should not receive government benefits, but according to a 1994 Urban Institute report, ââ¬Å"immigrants generate significantly more in taxes paid than they cost in services received.â⬠Studies demonstrate that taxes go to the federal government, states Cole, but when the ââ¬Å"state and federal moneyâ⬠is distributed, the figures show no evidence about the cost of immigrants. The United States loses money on immigrants who recently moved to the county because they have not yet ââ¬Å"made it.â⬠For this reason, the author affirms that immigrants are a big advantage to the economy . Social programs are unavailable to undocumented immigrants, expresses Cole, but are granted rights to benefits of medical and nutritional care and education for children. Eliminating health care would ââ¬Å"cost u s more in the long run,â⬠explains Cole. Coleââ¬â¢s fourth ââ¬Å"mythâ⬠involves he misconception that ââ¬Å"Aliens refuse to assimilate, and are depriving us of our cultural and political unity.â⬠Throughout history, immigrants have developed and created the ââ¬Å"American cultureâ⬠into what it is today, comments Cole. He quotes Supreme Court Justice Stephen Field for writing in 1984 that the Chinese ââ¬Å"have remained among us a separate people, retaining their original peculiarities of dress, manners, habits, and modes of living, which are as marked as their complexion and language.â⬠After five years, Field supported his remarks towards Chinese immigrants. Our society pressures immigrants to adapt to American culture, exerts Cole. For this reason, Cole raises the question is it ethical to ââ¬Å"limit immigrants in a societyâ⬠that is built upon the cultureà of past immigrants? Coleââ¬â¢s final ââ¬Å"mythâ⬠is ââ¬Å"Noncitizen immigrants are not entitled to constitutional rights.â⬠The Bill of Rights protects all people, Cole contends, only reserving for citizens the right to vote and run for a federal office position. In contrast, immigrants are still treated less than a U.S. citizen because they are foreigners. Cole points out that in 1893, the executive branch required Chinese laborers to prove their residency in the United States by the testimony of ââ¬Å"at least one credible white witnessâ⬠simply because ââ¬Å"nonwhites could not be trusted.â⬠Cole is handling a pending case in the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit that has the Clinton Administration arguing that legal immigrants living in the country should have no more First Amendment Rights than first-time immigrants coming into the United States ââ¬Å"-that is, none.â⬠Cole explains in an example that a non-citizen can be deported for expressing themselves th e same way as a citizen is allowed to. In conclusion, Cole acknowledges a quote that he was taught: ââ¬Å"we will be judged by how we treat others.â⬠By this standard, Cole goes on to explain that if we keep treating immigrants the way that we do right now, ââ¬Å"we are not in very good shape.ââ¬

There are several different works called The Kiss, created by different artists. Auguste Rodin, Constatin Brancusi, and Gustav Klimt all have their own version of the work. While Rodin and Brancusi created a sculpture, Klimt created a painting. These artists conveyed many different emotions for their viewers to perceive. Gustav Klimt trained at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts as an architectural painter from 1876 until 1883. His talent was shown at a very early age. He primarily produced paintings, murals, and sketches in which he continuously focused on the female body. Klimt was known to have an obsession with women, especially red heads. Many of his paintings have a hidden sexual meaning. Klimt steered away from traditional allegory and symbolism. His painting ââ¬Å"The Kissâ⬠is from his prominent ââ¬ËGolden Phaseââ¬â¢ which was known for its success. During this period he often used gold leaf. He began working on one of his most famous paintings, The Kiss, in 1907. Some of the mediums used were oil pant and gold leaf on an oil canvas, 180x180cm.The use of gold leaf has links to both the Bronze Age art and Western Art from the use of spiral patterns and decorative tendrils. Books of accounts plays very important role for the users of the financial statements of the company as the financial statement is prepared through the books of accounts only. The weakness that has been observed in this is that the book keeper has the power to authorize the accounts receivable supervisor to write off the balances of the customers if the amount outstanding is more than six months. The authorization is improper because of the fact that the book keeper does not goes into the details as to why the amount is outstanding and does not even follow up with the customers as reminder to make the payment. He on his own discretion allows the accounts receivable to write off the balances. It has been regarded as the weakness due to the fact that if the same system will be followed then there will be the high chances of misrepresenting the affairs of the company to its stakeholders and shareholders (Ji, 2016). Inflexibility in Stopping Approval of Extra Credit to the Customers The responsibility to extend the credit to the customers and increase their credit limit is of the credit manager. The weakness that has been observed lies on the part of the book keeper who issues guidance to the credit manager to not to extend additional credit facilities to the customers who have not paid their outstanding due for more than the six months. The policy that is being followed by the book keeper is totally rigid and inflexible and is not according to the nature and type of every business operating in the industry. It is because there is high possibility that the credit manager would have extended the credit of that customer before one day of completion of the six months. It is happened because of the fact that no system has been put in place by the company where the monthly or daily reports can be sent and shared between the different segments of the finance function of the company rather they have d eveloped the system where one segment informs the other segment on the day when the wrong has happened and ask other segment to act quickly and perform the function in the manner specified. This has been regarded as the weakness because of the fact that the current system if prevails for long can result in loss of faith of the customers and worst can happen with the no customers and thereby closure of the company. Improper Cash Handling practices The responsibility to handle and manage the cash lies on the cashier. In the general practice, the cashier shall collect the cash first and then records the same in the books of accounts and thereafter deposits the same in the bank account of the company. But in the given situation, the cashier is collecting the cash first from the customers and instead of recording the same in the books of accounts, get the cash deposited in the bank account and then made the entries in the books of accounts as per the cash deposit slip received from the bank. Further the cashier sends the bank statement along with the cash deposit slip to the book keeper to reconcile the same. The said reconciliation is of no use as the amount of deposition will always tallied with the deposit slip. There was no check at the time of receiving the cash and depositing the same in bank. Further reconciling the same with bank is vague. In the cash being deposited in the bank, there are the chances of getting it manipulated. This deficiency is regarded as weakness because it can have chances of embezzlement of cash and frauds can be happened easily (Lenard, Petruska, Alam and Yu, 2016). Remedies for Weaknesses The weakness in the internal control system of the company can be reduced by applying the proper corrective actions. The following actions have to be taken by the management of the company to correct the weakness in the internal controls relating to cash receipts and billing functions: There shall be defined system for approving the credit limit of the contractor customer. It shall not be done on the basis of the familiarity gained with the customer rather shall be purely done on the basis of the creditworthiness of the customer. The creditworthiness is judged by the external rating agencies and the company shall put a system in place for getting the rating done for each customer before approving the credit limit (Biegelman and Bartow, 2012). The company shall have proper billing and invoicing system where the sale price shall be tallied with the pre numbered charge form given by the sale associate to the accounts receivable supervisor. This tallying of figures shall be done for each and every sales invoice and the monthly report shall be shared within all the segments of the finance function. The policy of writing off the account balances of the customers shall be done on flexible basis. The current period of six months is too short and is also not as per the provisions of the relevant accounting standards and the corporations act, 2001. The period shall be increased and write off shall be done when there is high probability of non recovery of the amount. The stopping of the credit approval shall be done on the basis of the monthly report received from the book keeper and as per the defined policy of the company. This monthly report shall contain the name of the customers along with the detail of amounts which are outstanding from the very long period. Policy of the company shall be flexible in relation to the amount and period of outstanding. Cashier shall be given clear cut instructions to not to deposit the cash directly, first it shall be entered in the books of accounts and the cash collection shall be reconciled with the particular sale invoice. This reconciliation shall be given to all the segments of the finance function so that the policy regarding the write off, credit approval, etc can be reframed clearly (Ritt, 2006). Conclusion Finance Function is the important function upon which whole working of the company depends. In the given case study, it is identified that there are internal control weaknesses related to each part of the function whether it relates to the invoice generation to the customers or cash collection from the customers. The report has provided the appropriate reasons of its presence and defining as the weaknesses and proper remedies has been given for each weaknesses.
