This quality determines an organization’s popularity in the industry. Incase an organization uses identities that are hard to understand, only a few individuals will associate with it. It is appropriate for an organization to adapt a name that portrays the services it offers. For example, ‘National Hospital Corporation’ of America reveals that this organization deals with Medicare. HCA’s mission is the caring and improving of people’s lives through the provision of high eminence and cost effectual Medicare. This mission helps in motivating both employees and clients who seek the services of the corporation. It is evident that this mission statement is the reason behind the excellent services provided by different hospitals operated by this corporation. It is noteworthy that for an organization to succeed, it must have a mission statement. This acts as the guideline to the management and employees of that organization. The organizations vision is making Medicare easily accessible in communities (HCA, 2011). HCA is a privately owned company that operates medical facilities. Moreover, it is a profit making entity because it charges for the medical services it offers. The company has no one owner because a group of physicians founded it in 1960’s. A Chairman and C.E.O manages this institution. In addition, the company administration comprises of a president who is also the chief financial officer. The corporation has a huge market share evident by the large number of medical facilities that it operates. It is apparent that it has more than 170 facilities, which makes it one of the largest corporations in America. This means that it has employed many workers who foresee its daily operations. Thus, the institution has employed approximately 183,000 workers in its 170 facilities and in the community as community workers.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Furthermore, it also trains medical students under the internship programs. Most importantly, the corporation employs a significant proportion of workers in the private sector (Casenotes CLB, 2009). According to Kleber (2001), the corporation has its headquarters in Nashville in the sta te of Tennessee. However, the institution has one hundred and sixty four hospitals and one hundred and six surgery facilities in 20 states in the United States of America and Britain. It is evident that this arrangement has ensured the institution provides adequate services to the community. Analysts believe that the spreading of the institution’s facilities has brought services close to the community. Most importantly, the 183,000 employees that HCA has hired are highly qualified. This is because even though these individuals have gone through training in school, HCA ensures it gives them more training to enable them acclimatizes with the operations at the institutions. HCA was initially a domestic institution, but currently it has expanded to Britain. Thus, it is an international organization. Its status as an international organization has increased clients confidence in the institution’s services. It is apparent that institutions that extend beyond the borders appe al more to the consumers than domestic ones. This is because they believe this arrangement comes with personnel that are more qualified. Thus, it is obvious that the services offered are of high quality. HCA has managed to surmount the challenges that engulf international organizations. This is because it has an excellent management structure. Frist Wilson (2003) reveals that the history of the organization dates back to 1960 when ‘Dr.Thomas Frist Sr’ and his physician friends formed the park view hospital. This hospital operated well except for a few financial difficulties that it faced. Thus, Thomas and his friends started the search for a group that would manage the hospital. The most important function of this group was to provide finances for the growth of the hospital.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Hospital Corporation of America Mission specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In 1968, Thomas and two other physicians namely jack Massey and first Jr decided to form their own company called Hospital Corporation of America (HCA). HCA expanded with time by bringing together and managing a group of hospitals in the U.S. Its main aim was to provide quality services to the population. It is apparent that it succeeded in its initial mission because it worked closely with local physicians. The company then rapidly expanded, constructing hospitals in under privileged communities and accepting to manage hospitals owned by other companies and individuals. Its monetary resources, administration proficiency, and medical milieu enabled it to perform its duties excellently. It is noteworthy that the company focuses on a core set of excellently performing hospitals. In 1969, the hospital had eleven hospitals, which operated under its management and guidance. By the end of the same year, the hospital had twenty-six hospitals with a bed capacity of 3000. What followed a rapid growth, as the busine ss expanded until it attained operating revenue of twenty four billion dollars by 1981. In 1993, HCA acquired Medicare America and other health care ventures. As a result, the company augmented its market share. Today it is one of the largest businesses in America, as it provides many jobs to citizens. Moreover, it serves many clients. References Casenotes, Casenote Legal Briefs (CLB). (2009). The Quasi-market Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

The Quasi-market - Essay Example On the supply side, there is competition between service suppliers; but, in contrast with pure markets, suppliers are not necessarily privately owned, nor are they necessarily required to make profits. On the demand side, consumer purchasing power resides not in cash but in a budget confined to the purchase of a specific service, and the service user does not exercise the final choice concerning purchasing decisions. Despite such artificiality, the quasi-market is a key concept in the quasi-business discourse. We're social work to think of itself as though it were a business, then having a market with which it had to deal was crucial to the installation of that thinking. The degree of shift involved is indicated in the powerful political legitimation function the quasi-market performed for the Conservative government. Market outcomes are neither fair nor unfair. They are either the result of the operation of impersonal market forces or they stem from the body responsible for gate kee ping access to the market in the case of social work, the local authority. As such, quasi-markets offered the possibility of central government holding at arm’s length the responsibility for the outcomes of its social welfare policy. The introduction of quasi-markets in social work, initially in the sphere of community care but later developing in a range of other services such as foster care and children’s homes, made a significant contribution to establishing the social work business, for a number of reasons. First, marketisation undermined the sense in which social services had represented a

The Media and Its Responsibilities Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

The Media and Its Responsibilities - Essay Example The media has continued to crusade for rights of the minority, better healthcare, improved education standards, environmental conservation in ways that seek to improve the welfare of communities and groups. To this extent, the media remains a formidable force for positive social transformation for the present and future generations. On the negative side, the media has incurred criticisms from groups, individuals, and sections of the society for practices considered generally unethical or harmful to consumers (Ward, 2011). Claims of explicit content reaching children and individuals with sensibilities continue to affect the positive aspects of the media. Moreover, there are increasing concerns of unethical professional practices among journalists and media houses with calls of increased regulation coming from religious organizations and other facets of the society’s leadership. It is important to consider the fact that some of the criminal activities in the society have been blamed on the loose regulations of the media content particularly with regard to uncensored exposure of pornographic materials and violent media content (Ward, 2011). The negative aspects of the media have tended to increase with the increasing regulation of the airwaves and the growth of the information communication and technology i nfrastructure across the globe. Philosophically, a comprehensive analysis of the media and its responsibilities could incorporate the theories of utilitarianism, virtue ethics and deontology. Both the positive and the negative aspects of the media could be assessed in terms of the ethical underpinnings on which the various actions are based. According to the theory of deontology, people should adhere to their obligations and duties, whenever they make decisions and judgments that have the nature of a moral dilemma (Shafer-Landau, 2012; White, 2009). According to this theory, the moral rightness or wrongness of an action

Requests strategies encountered by Iraqi students in Australian Dissertation

Requests strategies encountered by Iraqi students in Australian Universities - Dissertation Example Request strategies basically helps the students to clear their idea and concept regarding any reading they are doing of the text and then ask questions to the instructors in order to understand the key concepts of it and to clear all the queries. Sometimes requesters may hesitate to make any requests because it creates nuisance for the requester and for the recipient to answer it. Iraqi culture which is suppose to be the most influential culture in terms of protecting their values, beliefs and cultural positions follow their own language in order to communicate. Language is the first medium to communicate with the intercultural and the cross cultural variations and it is seems to be the barrier if the proper communication is not performed. For Iraqi’s, English is suppose to be the second language because they give priority to their own language first, whereas pragmatic competence is the ability beyond the understanding of the grammar and to understand the clear levels of any l anguage. This short research thesis basically discusses few issues and tribulations that are faced in the studies of pragmatic in order to create the idea of clear understanding of the communication and the politeness factor into it (Cook, & Liddicoat, 2002, Introduction, Para. 1). It also discuses the inter language issues that are faced by all of those for whom English is not their first language and due to this they do face threatening acts and unable to use appropriate strategies and politeness into their speech (Chen, 2006, Brown and Levinson’s Concept of Face and Politeness Theory, Para. 3). As for Iraqi students, English is the second language and for them it creates difficulty in communicating and following requests strategies with the teachers and the instructors there in Australia. The use of pragmatic inter language is used for all those who want to learn and to use L2 pragmatic knowledge (Kasper, 1996, Introduction, p. 147). The speaker should create the politenes s factor in order to build strong perception of the listener for understanding the context. To overcome various gaps between the communication and general pragmatics knowledge in order to understand English as second language the process of acculturation facilitates because bilingualism always helps students to understand the environment and helps in learning when such students like Iraqi’s go to some other place to acquire education. Now the pragmatic competence and knowledge of the learner is obligatory then the grammatical competence of any student. Pragmatics involve all the important factors including the style, conversational structure and various aspects that helps in building communication effectively (Quraishi, 1994, Personal Experience with L2 Politeness, p. 1). The importance of using and learning request strategies is that it helps the bilingual and monolingual learners to bring politeness into inter cultural communications so that it gets easier for others to fee l comfortable while dealing with them (Quraishi, 1994, The importance of Politeness Strategies in Effective Communication, p. 2). For those who are monolinguals it gets difficult for them to communicate if they are not polite or rude, therefore there are certain techniques and strategies that are important for them to learn which includes the politeness and request strategies and the certain pragmatics also help them in understanding the intercultural communication(Chen, 2006, Sociolinguistic Competence & Transfer, Para. 1). Rationale of the study The purpose of the study is to identify two things: How Iraqi learners of English realize their request strategies in relation to the social dimensions of power (P) and distance (D)?   How Australian native speakers and Vietnamese learners of Engli

Human activity causing climate change

Human activity causing climate change Climate is changing in a horrid way. The change is influenced both by natural reason and human activities. El Nino, the Earth surface temperature increased, acid rains and many phenomenons are damaging the environment. Experts are worried about the rapid changing climate, because the change may fetch people many big disasters. Worldwide people are trying to find the solution and save humanity. This essay will discuss how human activities contribute to climate change, and give some advice how to prevent the Earth. Human activities in causing climate change It is clear that human activities accelerate the climate change. The first part of essay will canvass 2 human activities that effect climate change. Burning fossil fuels The earth surface temperature increasing owe to greenhouse gases, because they carry the short-wave radiation from the Sun to the Earth (NSW Department of Primary Industries, 2008). Obviously, more greenhouse gases mean severe climate change. Before showing the reasons of greenhouse gases growth, people need to understand what greenhouse gases are. The reason why people call these gases greenhouse gases is because they work like a glass greenhouse that heats up with the radiation trapped by the glass (NSW Department of Primary Industries, 2008). Greenhouse gases are not just one kind of gas, actually it includes water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide (NSW Department of Primary Industries, 2008:2). Obviously, because of the high-level greenhouse gases concentration, the temperature became higher than before. However, burning fossil fuels are the arch-criminal of rising greenhouse gases in atmospheric has accelerated. Excessive human emissions also caused 1.4 ÂÂ °F gone up in the past century (Pew Centre on Global Climate Change, 2008b). Burning fossil fuels not only cause greenhouse gases to contribute to climate change, but also sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides contribute to climate change because of their ability to create acid rain. Acid rains which have baneful influences on buildings, trees and animals are also bad for climate (John, S et al. 2006). Overuse of the natural resources Apart from burning fossil fuels, the reason why climate change in such a fast way is overuse of the natural resources. The natural resources on the Earth are limited, no matter non-renewable resources or renewable resources. It seems that the growing population of mankind does not realize the facts; people always exploit more resources than peoples requirement to make sure the trend of growth. Conspicuously, overuse the nature resources becomes one part of causation led to climate change. People knows that many daily supplies made from wood, such as papers, some clothes and furniture, ordered more and more trees felled. As previously mentioned, greenhouse gases are bad for climate, and one of the methods to decrease is more plants. Tress can absorb carbon dioxide, and mitigate the consistency of greenhouse gases. However, the bad news is that the solution is dissatisfying for overusing the natural resources. As a result, deforestation exacerbates the climate. On the other hand, defor estation also conduces to desertification which contributes on climate change. Land degradation can also lead to environmental degradation, poverty, migration and the cycle of conflict, but also often affected countries and regions, political stability risks (UNCCD: United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, 2009). People who live here need to deforest to earn money to make live. Outline further deterioration may be prevented After discussing the human activities, the second part of essay will bring forward 2 solutions that may protect the environment. Government regime As mentioned above, burning fossil fuels is one of the human activities that contribute to climate change. Factories create electricity by burning fossil fuels. To solve the problems, government regime seems to be an indispensable method. Nowadays, there is an effective policy that is accepted in Australia and some European countries, which named cap and trade (Minter-Ellison, 2007). The regime relate to electricity generation, transport, industrial process, forestry, agriculture and waste (Minter-Ellison, 2007). The policy means government will cap the greenhouse gases emissions for every factory or else. For instance, a factory has to pay for the emissions if it emit more greenhouse gases than the cap, also a factory can sale its emissions if it emit less greenhouse gases than the cap. With government regime, people and factories are encouraged to reduce the measure of burning fossil fuels. This is a good example for government to constitute some policies, order emitters prevent en vironment on their own inititiative. Exploit new energy and find how to use the new energy The second solution is to exploit new energy, and find how to use the new energy. Because people is used to manufacture some fuels by wooden, deforestation is hard to avoid. Account for the problem, to exploit new energy is imminent. Actually some new energy like wind and solar power have been found for many years, but for the limit of science, people can not use the new energy well. For example, people have no idea about solar power when it is cloudy. Fortunately, PSEG Global, a company found the method to use wind and store wind. According to their announcement, when wind power beyond the need of consumer, they will store the wind in underground caverns or in tanks. During the peak hours, the stored wind will release and become energy (Davidson, P. 2008). Besides, scientist also exploited some other new energy and found how to use. E-Coal is one kind of new energy which substitutes for coal. E-Coal was called no greenhouse gases emission fuel, because it was made by biomass, though E-Coal liberate carbon dioxide when burning, E-Coal can absorb equal carbon dioxide during their life (Davidson, P. 2008). In conclusion, human activities like burning fossil fuels and overusing the natural resources changed climate a lot. Only nowadays people are aware of the importance of environmental, and start to solve the problems. Government and scientists have been working to find the solution. Everyone lives in the Earth, so everybody has to do their best to protect environment. References Davidson, P. (2008) Energy Innovators: 4 creative solutions to energy problems (abridged). USA Today. Shewin Case

PA402: Employment Law Unit 3: The Employment Relationship – Shewin Memorandum Your Course Project: Read About the Shewin Memorandum Throughout the course, you will work on the Shewin Memorandum. Your first step is to become acquainted with Ms. Shewin and the fact pattern. Ima Shewin is a 45-year-old African-American woman with advanced degrees in English and journalism from the University of Chicago. She has been employed by The Blabber, a newspaper in Atlanta, Georgia, for 10 years. She started as an entrylevel researcher. Two years later, she was promoted to a junior-level reporter position, and two years after that, to a senior-level reporter position. She has now been a senior-level reporter for the last six years. During the first eight years of her employment, Shewin reported to George Doright. Two years ago, The Blabber reorganized, and Doright was moved to another division in the company. Since then, Shewin has reported to Arthur King, The Blabber's senior editor.Follow ing the reorganization, two editors have retired. Although Shewin applied for these positions, they were not offered to her. In fact, she was only invited to interview for one of the positions, although she believes she met the qualifications for both. Last month, she applied for a junior-editor position she has been after for several years now. Based upon the qualifications that were identified in the job's classified ad, she felt she was a shoo-in. She applied and was interviewed. The interview with Mr.King did not go as well as she had hoped. The interview took place over lunch in a restaurant. King started out the conversation by engaging in seemingly harmless social banter, but Shewin was uncomfortable with his personal questions about her relationship with her boyfriend. A few weeks after the interview, the company announced that it was hiring Gene Whiz, someone from outside the company. Whiz is 26 years old and recently earned a master's degree in journalism from the Universi ty of Chicago. He has worked as a reporter for a small local newspaper. Shewin believes a number of factors may have been held against her. For example, only three women are in the upper levels of management, and all were promoted prior to the reorganization. King was not involved in the promotion decisions for any of the three women. King has a reputation for making sexist comments, which several women in the company find offensive, as do a number of men. For example, he described one pregnant reporter as barefoot and pregnant. † He has also asked Shewin out to â€Å"discuss business,† invitations that she has declined. She feels that rejecting him may have something to do with her not getting the job. Another possible factor is that there are only five African-American senior managers in the company. Shewin has heard through the rumor mill that Whiz is part AfricanAmerican. Also, prior to Mr. Doright's transfer, Shewin filed a complaint against some of her male colleag ues.Apparently the men whose cubicles were surrounding Shewin's area had a habit of discussing their weekend dates in graphic detail on Monday mornings. Although they did not make these comments directly to Shewin, the conversations PA402: Employment Law Unit 3: The Employment Relationship – Shewin Memorandum were quite loud and she overheard them regularly. Clinical Experience and Medical School Application

Clinical Experience and Medical School Application What Is Clinical Experience? Clinical experience is volunteer experience or employment in the medical field, preferably in the area that interests you the most as a potential career. For example, if you want to work in a rural family practice, you might volunteer in a rural office for family medicine. Someone interested in pathology might shadow a pathologist. General experience in a hospital, nursing home, research lab, or clinic are additional examples. The depth and breadth of the experience can vary, but it is important that your experience gives you a firsthand look at the reality of your intended career choice. Either volunteer work or paid employment is acceptable. How Do I Get It? There are many routes to obtaining clinical experience. Your academic advisor or department chair should have contacts in place to help you find a position. You can ask your family doctor for names of contacts. You can call local hospitals or doctors offices. Check with labs, nursing homes, and clinics. Competitive experiences exist worldwide which may be advertised on a bulletin board outside science faculty offices. If you are having trouble finding a position, call admissions offices at medical schools and ask for ideas. Be proactive! Dont wait around for someone else to arrange this experience. Demonstrating initiative is a desirable trait for a medical college applicant. When Should I Get It? Ideally, you want to have started clinical experience prior to completing and submitting the AMCAS (American Medical Colleges Application Service) application. If you havent started it before then, at least have a starting date for the experience that can be placed on the application. Not only can this experience aid in getting secondary applications and interviews, but it is often essential. For traditional students looking to enter medical school the fall following graduation from college, this means you want to start this experience during your junior year or the summer between your junior and senior year. If your timeline is different, then plan accordingly. How Important Is Clinical Experience? Clinical experience is very important! Many schools require it; others strongly prefer to see it. Remember that admission to a medical college is competitive, so be prepared to demonstrate your commitment. There is no excuse for not getting clinical experience. The very least that you can do is to arrange a series of interviews with medical professionals to ask them about their work. Saying Im too busy or I dont know anyone who can help me or my advisor didnt get around to it will not impress the selection committee. Clinical experience is important because it documents that you know what is involved in the medical profession. You are entering medical school with an awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of medicine.

Transnational Movements and Ideologies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Transnational Movements and Ideologies - Essay Example Civil unrest and internal conflicts threatens the calm in most Arab countries such as Syria, Egypt owing to disunity exerted by the activities of the Islamic movements, each of the Arab nations comprise of different ethnic and cultural values with unique tribal makeup. Each of these tribes has different preferences with regard to governance and community demands. As such, the groups form movements with unique goals and objectives regardless of the ideology adopted. The goals range from demand for various social freedoms such as speech, religion among others to national recognition. Most are the times that the movements are at war with each other following differences that emerge over supremacy. The major concern lies with the tension created among citizens resulting in clashes within the Arab states. The high levels of polarisation in the countries have seen loss of lives, destruction of property among other social and economic consequences. Civil unrest has been demonstrated in vari ous Arab countries such as Egypt, Libya, Syria following the wide spread Arab uprising. For instance, Syria is entangled in a civil war from January to April 2012 after mass protests seeking to establish political reforms. The evolution of Islam to a political front has seen growing radicalisation and extremism among the masses calling for reforms. This is seen as a move to curb the radicalisation of transnational movements and the proliferation of related ideologies in the country. The extent of radicalisation, organisation, and funding of the transnational movements may see calls for independence. As such, the affected country is faced with calls for cessation and recognition of independence of the regi on failure to which, rebellion and violence may result. The onset of the 2012 Tuareg Rebellion in Mali sought to emulate the Arab uprising, but resulted in a coup d'etat in March 2012 (BBC). This has seen sustained conflicts in the affected countries, and should independence be granted; other movements may emerge to claim
